Me: Okay, I can give you like, one, two, four shots, you just tell me a number.

Old man: And the frozen yogurt. Some frozen yogurt.
Me: Would you like anything in it? it comes with one mix-in.
Old man: What? I’m going to put the espresso in it. It’s my little thing.
Me: Uh, espresso is one of our standard options to mix in your yogurt. I don’t have to charge you separately for it then. I can just give you the espresso yogurt.
Old man: Would I still get a cup of espresso?
Me: No, but it would already be mixed in with your yogurt, so you wouldn’t have to do it yourself.
Old man: But it’s still yogurt, right?
Me: …Yes. So, I have the pecan pie and the espresso yogurt, anything else?
Old man: And the soft serve!
Me: You want an espresso yogurt and a… soft-serve ice cream or something?
Old man: Well, I want the yogurt to be soft-serve.
Me: …Yes, sir, that’s what you’re ordering.
Old man: You know, well, sometimes there’s a question about the semantics of… you know.
Me: Ooookay, that’ll be $7.12.
Old man: So that was our spring, huh?!
Me: Excuse me?

Actually I’m doing pretty good here! I’ve got a nice little set-up, close to a cool coffee shop (Ellipsis) and Devon Fresh Market where I buy fresh veggies for super cheap, and really, I can live very minimally! You’d be surprised how little I need.

I’m not gonna call the cops on the landlord because, hey, whatever. I don’t care. Maybe if I hear him killin’ someone, sure, but dealing crack ain’t no thang man I ain’t no narc dawg ya hear

YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!

Let me tell you guys all about the last few weeks. I was forced out of my place on April 30th but had nowhere to go for a month. I begged one of my last good friends in the city to let me sleep on her couch all month, and I payed her a little bit and she agreed.

Complicating this is the fact that I’ve slept with her in the past. It was years ago and we’re both not interested in each other like that at all in the slightest and we haven’t been for years. But her boyfriend is still a little weirded out that I’m there and that’s understandable. She also has a roommate who is pretty odd but that’s another story.

So I started picking up some part time shifts at the coffee shop that I quit last month, and they had me on for a five-day stretch from Thursday through today. They didn’t tell me, though, that they weren’t scheduling me any back-up help, so it was just me… completely alone in the store… on a hot and busy spring weekend that ended up being the most profitable weekend of the year so far. Just me! It’s hard enough with two people, but alone, I’m literally out of breath and providing the worst service ever to people just to try and keep up with making drinks and sandwiches and ice cream and etc for a line of people that stretches to the door and doesn’t die down for hours.

So if I hadn’t quit already, I probably would’ve after this weekend, because what I’m saying it was fucking terrible. I was supposed to do stuff this weekend but instead I came home and essentially passed out.

Oh, but, “home” is my friend’s place. Except on Thursday, they moved out! They only moved a couple blocks away, but they’re gone, all their stuff is gone, it’s empty besides my three boxes and two suitcases (containing all my current worldly possessions) and one tiny little loveseat they left me to sleep on. They left me a comforter too, but I just found out I’m highly allergic to the fabric or something so it’s sitting at the other end of the house right now.

It’s a creepy place to live because it’s a really large, spacious three-bedroom apartment with incredibly creaky floors and thin walls. This is bad because the landlord, who doesn’t know I’m staying here, lives in the basement and can hear a lot that’s going on up here. I can also hear what’s going on with him down there, which is mostly crack deals. He’s dealing crack out of the basement. This isn’t a metaphor or anything.

I have one day of work left on Saturday and I leave on Friday the 31st.

May’s a weird month.

I’m sorry but if you think Ke$ha is making anything other than exactly the music she wants to be making, you and I are gonna have words.

Ke$ha grew up in Nashville in a lower middle class family of hippies with strong opinions on spirituality and integrity. She was raised by a single mom who made money, but not much, by writing songs, and music was always a huge part of her life. She was considered white trash by the other kids at her school, and the large population of bible-beaters used to mock her for her weird clothes and alleged skanky reputation.

After all that, she now gets to support herself and her family by making bank writing hugely popular songs about how she doesn’t care if you think she’s trashy because she’s true to herself and won’t apologize for wanting to dance, get laid, and live life the way she believes life should be lived. If that’s not a fucking fairytale ending, I don’t know what is. And I don’t know why you’re trying to erase her role in her own success by acting like some big shot record label executive chose this path for her…like otherwise, she would only ever release strummy acoustic ballads like she’s on some Taylor Swift shit?

I’m not saying this song isn’t beautiful. And I have ears, so I’m not going to argue that it’s not a significant departure from her usual stuff…but why does it automatically qualify as “better” music? How come just because you personally don’t enjoy something, it can be dismissed as having no merit? You sound like a basic white dude who reads Pitchfork.

This song does demonstrate more of her vocal talent than the auto-tuned electro club bangers that she put out on her first album, I’ll give you that. But nobody killed that vocal talent…she still has it. She also has songwriting talent, which she demonstrates by writing all those absurdly catchy hits of hers, as well as songs for other artists. She also has a lot of material you probably haven’t bothered to listen to, including a lot of guitar-driven Southern-rock-influenced tracks on her latest album, and a devastatingly tender cover of Bob Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice. She has plenty of freedom to make whatever music she wants, because her whole life is about doing whatever she wants. Don’t underestimate the power of that. It’s not a small thing for a young woman who is considered crass and unlikeable by so many to become so successful.

Nobody is forcing their will on Ke$ha. If anyone tried to, she’d kick their ass. She’d probably kick yours too, given the opportunity.

Everybody always says, “Oh, you work in a coffee shop, it can’t be that bad!” And then they think of the coffee shops they went to in college. Unfortunately, this is not one of those coffee shops. We’re not really near a school- we get a few Loyola students now and then but it’s not a significant percentage of our customers. We are, however, near at least seven mental hospitals and assisted living centers, as well as a couple homes for old people with criminal records and behaviour problems.

I wish we were the cool coffee shop like the one on your college campus. Unfortunately, we are more like the cockroach-infested coffee shop in the downstairs lobby of an asylum. Now and then a college kid will wander in, and then when one of the creepy mental old men sit down at her table and start talking at her, she leaves, never to return.

Thank god this is my second to last day.

(I am using Windex and a rag to clean the inside of the transparent glass door. A weird guy comes up to it and makes eye contact as I finish it up, but before I’m done, he yanks it open to try and get in. Note that it’s a nice sunny day.)

Me: Hey, whoa, excuse me, you’ll have to wait about ten seconds, I’m just finishing up washing this.
Weird Guy: (rolls his eyes and sighs)

(A short time later, I’m in the back kitchen washing dishes. I am the only employee in the store so security is occasionally a touchy issue. The weird guy knocks on the wooden archway into the kitchen and then comes in behind the counter.)

Me: Whoa, excuse me sir, you’ll have to leave the kitchen!
WG: (not leaving) So the artist this month, wow, could you tell her something for me?
Me: Please leave the kitchen, sir. Also, no, I’m sorry, I don’t know the artist and have no idea who she is or how I’d contact her.
WG: Haha, well, just tell her that you know, I really like her landscapes and what she’s doing so far with what she has up here, but-
Me: Once again, sir, I don’t know her. I am not going to tell her any of this. I have no idea who she is. Please leave the kitchen.
WG: Right, but tell her that maybe if she just took like, some kind of a classical painting class-
Me: No. Leave.
WG: (finally leaves, looking confused)
